8th grade reading level and meeting with instructor required for acceptance into this program.

$630 ($80 tool kit, $50 scrubs, and $120 course fee, $50 lab fee, $330 tech & activity fees, $30 registration fee per school year), to be paid by student/parent at HCC

This 32-week introductory course is designed for high school students interested in pursuing a career in nail technology. The course provides foundational theory and hands-on training aligned with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) 350-hour Nail Technology curriculum requirements.

 

Students attend class four days per week (Tuesday–Friday) for 1.5 hours per day. Course 190 focuses on core concepts of nail care, safety, sanitation, anatomy, and nail enhancement systems. Instruction alternates between theory lessons and practical application to keep students engaged while building professional competency.

 

Topics covered include:

- History of Nail Technology

- Infection Control & Sanitation

- Anatomy & Physiology

- Skin and Nail Structure, Disorders & Diseases

- Basic Manicuring, Gel Manicuring, and Pedicuring

- Chemistry & Product Knowledge

- Nail Enhancements: Tips, Forms, Acrylics, Gels, Resin Systems, and Electric Filing

- Electricity and Product Chemistry

- Creative Nail Art Techniques

 

Students will gain experience through mannequin practice, guided demonstrations, partner exercises, and structured projects. Upon completion, students will have accumulated a portion of the 350 required clock hours and will be prepared to continue in Course 192 to meet state licensure eligibility.

Course content covers COSM 190.

 

All accepted students will attend a mandatory orientation meeting prior to the start of classes.
