Summary Description
CareerTEC is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse to serve as the Health Occupations Youth Apprenticeship (HOYA 1) Instructor to provide classroom instruction, coordinate clinical and work-based learning experiences, and prepare high school juniors and seniors for careers in healthcare. The HOYA 1 Instructor provides leadership for Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program (BNATP) requirements while developing and maintaining strong partnerships with healthcare providers throughout northwest Illinois. The instructor plays a vital role in preparing students for postsecondary education and entry into high-demand healthcare careers. This is a regular full-time, 9½-month (180 days) position that aligns closely with the Freeport High School calendar.

Salary
$54,520–$61,569 for candidates holding a bachelor’s degree. Placement is based on the Freeport School District teacher salary schedule, which compensates based on the candidate’s education and experience. Candidates with additional college coursework over a bachelor’s are eligible for higher salary placement.
Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical qualifications include:
- Active Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license required;
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred;
- Minimum of two years of nursing experience, including at least one year providing care to geriatric or chronically ill adults in a long-term care setting;
- Eligible to become an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) CNA Instructor/Trainer, including completion of the required Train-the-Trainer program, if needed;
- Minimum of 2,000 hours of work experience as a Nursing Assistant/Aide and/or Patient Care Assistant and/or Nursing
- CPR Instructor Certification preferred (or willingness to obtain);
- Experience teaching, training, mentoring, or providing health education preferred;
- Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and instructional technology;
- Ability to develop positive relationships with students, families, healthcare partners, school personnel, and community partners; and
- Demonstrated leadership, flexibility, initiative, adaptability, and problem-solving skills.
No prior teaching license is required. Qualified registered nurses who meet the qualifications above are generally eligible to obtain the necessary Illinois educator licensure and IDPH CNA Instructor/Trainer approval. CareerTEC will assist the successful candidate through the licensure and certification process.
Performance Responsibilities
- Provides leadership to ensure successful completion of IDPH BNATP program objectives;
- Develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive, performance-based Health Occupations Youth Apprenticeship (HOYA) program;
- Plans and delivers engaging classroom instruction aligned with state standards and industry expectations;
- Coordinates educational, clinical, and work-based learning experiences for students;
- Establishes and maintains partnerships with hospitals, long-term care facilities, healthcare providers, and other business partners;
- Serves as liaison among students, parents, school districts, postsecondary institutions, and healthcare partners;
- Supervises students during clinical experiences, field trips, and job shadowing activities;
- Assists with student recruitment, orientation, and program promotion;
- Maintains student records, certifications, attendance, grades, and reports required by CareerTEC, IDPH, and other agencies;
- Monitors student progress and provides academic and career guidance;
- Collaborates with the HOYA 2 instructor/coordinator, CareerTEC Director, and other staff to ensure a seamless healthcare pathway for students;
- Participates in professional development and maintains required certifications and licensure;
- Identifies workforce needs and assists in aligning the program with regional healthcare employment opportunities;
- Performs related duties as assigned.
