HOYA 1 Aug/Sept. Article

FANTASTIC!!!! Fantastic is the word I have chosen to describe the start of this year.  Amazing students is all I can say about this group of young people. They have already worked very hard and I anticipate a great year.

Day two of class was a volunteer day for HOYA.  We have helped with Paint the Port for years.  This is a community fundraiser.  In the past it has raised money to better store fronts and add beauty to the new art plaza downtown Freeport.  That day these students rocked it with all they accomplished.  They marked and painted over 400 squares on the streets, survived a chilly drizzle of rain, and stuffed 500 hundred bags of promotion items from sponsors.  I was so proud of them for working so hard.  Of course they got to eat donuts and enjoy beverages too.  After all, where there is work there should be food!

We have already had a quiz on the rules of the classroom, studied the history of healthcare, and will have our first test on chapters 1 and 2 in the next week.  We are learning about the different types of facilities, different careers in healthcare and how to be  professional. They even survived my first life lesson on being owed nothing in the world or from the world and work ETHIC! Our goal is to grow as people this year, not just learn skills.

Handwashing is a skill we all think we know how to do,  but next week they will learn that no one knows the proper way. We will also begin to learn about resident’s rights and the forms of abuse.

Most exciting this Friday they get fitted for their uniforms! I love to see the excitement as they put them on and feel professional and important in them, because well they are important!

CHEERS TO A GREAT YEAR AND PERFECT START!
